PANHANDLE -- The Panhandle of Western Nebraska is undergoing big changes, Sen. Paul Strommen notes in his recent column.

"The opening of the Lake Mac Casino, Resort and Race Track located near Interstate 80 and Highway 26 in Ogallala marks a significant milestone in our region," Strommen said.

Sen. Strommen said the development brings economic impact to the area.

"More than just entertainment, this project serves as a catalyst for long-term economic growth, especially with the return of quarter-horse racing to Nebraska for the first time in years," he said.

Sen. Strommen said although the Lake Mac Casino, Resort and Race Track is still new, it is making an impact on the area.

"Already, it's generating a ripple effect with increased traffic off of I-80, longer visitor stays near Lake McConaughy, businesses in Ogallala and surrounding communities are seeing real benefits," he said.

He says tourism is one of the State's important industries, and Western Nebraska has many sites to draw tourists.

"Tourism is one of Nebraska's most vital industries, and Western Nebraska plays a key role in that success. From the Sandhills to scenic byways, our region offers unparalleled outdoor recreation, rich pioneer history, and genuine small-town hospitality," he said.

The combination of charm, history and geographic attractions is what draws tourism to the Panhandle, according to Strommen.

"Notable destinations like Lake McConaughy, Ash Hollow State Historic Park, Fort Robinson State Park, Toadstool Geologic Park, Agate Fossil Beds, Chimney Rock, War Bonnet Battle Field, and Car Henge draw thousands of visitors each year," he said.

These sites offer a unique blend of adventure, heritage, and natural beauty, he said.

In addition to the many natural and historic sites, Western Nebraska has many attractions for golfers. Regional courses include Bayside, Hillside, Oregon Trail, Chimney Rock, Dismal River Club, Sandhills, Prairie Club, Caprock Ranch, Grey Bull, Four Winds, and Crandle Creek.

"These attractions aren't just beautiful, they're economic drivers that bring in visitor dollars, support jobs and help keep our communities strong," Strommen said.

He said with continued investment, more tourists will experience Western Nebraska.

"As your senator, I remain committed to supporting policies and partnerships that promote tourism, empowers small businesses, and sustains the economic vitality of Western Nebraska," Strommen said.
