FREMONT, Neb. — Emergency crews at the site of the Horizon BioFuels explosion in Fremont are reducing their presence as the area is stabilized.

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday afternoon that there is still smoldering inside the grain elevator’s tower that could cause smoke but that there aren’t any remaining active flames. Some authorities are staying on site to monitor the smoldering.

According to a news release, the preliminary investigation by the Nebraska State Fire Marshal Agency indicated “an accidental dust explosion occurred during the manufacturing process.”

The release says additional investigation efforts are being impeded because of the instability of the structure.

Areas roads are back open except for Union Street immediately north of the plant.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to the community for the overwhelming support and generosity shown during the large-scale emergency response,” the sheriff’s office said in the release. “Thank you for standing with us during hats critical time.”

Authorities are deeming the site stable more than two days after an explosion destroyed the facility and claimed the lives of three people—employee Dylan Danielson and his two daughters.
