Students witness Nebraska Supreme Court in action during historic school visit
KEARNEY, Neb. - For the first time ever a Central Nebraska School has been transformed into a courtroom as part of a statewide civics education initiative.
Kearney High School hosting the Nebraska Supreme Court on Tuesday where students learned more about the Judicial system by seeing it live in action.
The mock court, held in the school's auditorium, heard arguments in two cases including a criminal appeal from Douglas County and a civil case involving a premarital agreement from Dodge County.
Some students even got the opportunity to ask questions of the court justices.
"There's a lot of questions that spark a classroom about the process of the Supreme Court, so it was really cool to watch students become engaged with the civic part of the courtroom and how that process works," said Kearney High Social Studies Teacher Josh Redman.
The event is part of the Nebraska Supreme Court’s ongoing civics education and public outreach initiative, which is supported by the Nebraska State Bar Foundation.
This initiative aims to increase the awareness and understanding of the legal system among high school students.
The event was also a part of Kearney High School's civic week, and was held in preparation for national law day which is May 1.
"There was a lot of excitement as we waited in line to get into the chat here so overall I think it was a good experience for our students," said Redman.
