NORFOLK - Walk the stacks of an library and it likely won't take long to find something you like.

For more and more library patrons the books they like are a little more visual than textual.

Graphic novels, comic books, and manga draw in millions of eyeballs every day. The Norfolk Public Library wants to celebrate the medium with their first ever ComicCon this summer.

"Comic and graphic novels for adults and for children make up a great portion of our circulation," says Whitney, youth services supervisor for the Norfolk Public Library. "We have a lot of readers that we know would be very invested in it."

The week-long event - June 16-21 - will cover all aspects of fandom, with comic creators and authors like Bob Hall (West Coast Avengers, Shadowman) and Dr. Lydia Kang (Star Wars). Organizers say there will also be seminars on animation, LARPing, and Dungeons and Dragons, all of them designed to appeal to the youngest fans in Nebraska.

"Youth come first," Whitney said. "But those adults that are the big kids at heart can definitely get involved."

The ComicCon culminates with a celebration at Johnson Park on Jun 21, including vendors and a youth cosplay parade.

"The fandom rules the world," Whitney said. "Anything goes. They can be whoever they want."

Historically there has been a stigma attached to graphic novels and comic books, that they somehow don't count as "real" books. Organizers said they wanted to organize the ComicCon to celebrate the fact that kids who read comic books are reading.

"It still counts as reading," Whitney said. "There's a lot of research at the forefront where we're learning more about how it connects visually to the feelings and emotions of the readers. It's really a beautiful medium."
