CHAPPELL, Neb. – A semi-tractor-trailer hauling cattle crashed late Monday night on Interstate 80, reportedly sending livestock into the roadway and triggering a chain reaction of accidents.

According to a witness at the scene, the crash occurred shortly before midnight near mile marker 98, between Chappell and the I-80/I-76 junction. The witness reported the semi went off the road, causing the trailer to tip and releasing cattle onto the interstate.

The condition of the cattle is not yet known, but multiple animals were seen in mobile fenced areas set up off the side of the highway. The crash reportedly led to additional accidents as vehicles encountered cattle in the road. The severity of those crashes has not been confirmed.

Traffic was reduced to one lane, and the scene was cleared shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday.

No details have been released regarding who was involved, injuries or the cause of the accident. The Nebraska State Patrol has been contacted for additional information.
