MAXWELL, Neb. -- Residents near the western Nebraska town of Maxwell had to evacuate twice after a wildfire Wednesday.

The fire was first reported around 1:30 p.m. near the GrayBull Golf Course, drawing response from multiple departments, including Wallace Aviation. 

Regional emergency officials said the blaze torched around 6,000 acres. They weren't aware of any structures that had been destroyed or any injuries. 

North Platte Police were asking residents northwest of Maxwell to evacuate. The initial order was lifted at 5:40 p.m., only to be reinstated 40 minutes later. 

Residents were able to return to their homes for good just after 7:30.
