Class D2 3-seed Archangels Catholic (nee Humphrey St. Francis) used a gritty performance to outlast 6-seed St. Mary's 44-38 on Thursday.

It was a struggle between two tremendous defenses, featuring three ties and two lead changes.

The difference was free-throw shooting. Archangels was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line, while the Cardinals were 9-for-21.

The Defenders move on to face Falls City Sacred Heart in the semifinals on Friday.
