LINCOLN, NE - The top-seeded Johnson-Brock girls basketball team was upset by the 8-seed of Guardian Angels Central Catholic on Thursday morning, 53-38, in the first round of the Class C2 State GBB Tournament in Lincoln...as heard on B103.

GACC got out to a strong start, doubling up J-B through one period, 16-8. The Eagles had eight offensive rebounds in the opening stanza, but struggled mightily from the field and turned the ball over more than usual. By halftime, the Bluejays' advantage was 27-18, only cut to single digits thanks to a Daley Pelican trey at the buzzer for the Eagles. J-B averaged ten TO's per game this season, but they had already reached that mark by recess.

In the second half, Johnson-Brock was able to get back within four at 35-31 in the closing seconds of the third quarter, but that's as close as it would get the rest of the way. J-B closed the TO deficit to just one by the final buzzer (22-21), but the Eagles still had a lot more giveaways than usual against the pressuring zone defense of the Bluejays. Johnson-Brock finished the day shooting 25% overall and just 15% from downtown (4/26), while GACC hit 37% from the floor & 29% from deep (4/14).

Johnson-Brock was led by Chloe Vice's eleven points, but she also led the way with eight giveaways. Brook Behrends tacked on eight points with nine rebounds, while Daley Pelican also had eight points. Taryn Ottemann grabbed a team-best ten boards, but was limited to just five points.

GACC saw Israeia "Izzy" Kreikemeier drop in a game-high 16 points, while coming close to a triple-double with nine boards & nine steals! Freshman Bailey Gerths knocked down 13 with seven rebounds and four blocks.

The Eagles' season comes to a close at 25-2, while the Bluejays are 22-5 and move on to the semis Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
