An ice jam on the Niobrara River has temporarily closed the campground at Smith Falls State Park after breaking loose on the evening of Feb. 19.

VALENTINE, Neb. - An ice jam on the Niobrara River has temporarily closed the campground at Smith Falls State Park after breaking loose on the evening of Feb. 19.
According to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, the ice jam has encroached into the campground, blocking the access road. The situation has also impacted access to the falls, prompting officials to close Verdigre Bridge, the footbridge leading to the falls, until further notice for public safety.

Smith Falls State Park is home to Nebraska’s tallest waterfall and is located along the Niobrara River, a designated National Scenic River.
