Strong start for Panhandle wrestlers at Nebraska high school state tournament

OMAHA, Neb. — The 2025 Nebraska School Activities Associations State Wrestling Championships kicked off Thursday at the CHI Health Center in Omaha with several wrestlers from western Nebraska punching tickets to the semifinals.
Sidney’s Patrick McCartney (190 pounds) and Cayson Boltjes (215 pounds) each advanced to the Class B semifinals. McCartney won his quarterfinal match, 2-0, over Fort Calhoun’s Alex Schuler. Boltjes edged Gretna’s Cayson Schlotfeld, 2-1, to move one step closer to a state title. Teammate Zech Roggasch (165 pounds) dropped his quarterfinal match, but remains alive in the consolation bracket.
Alliance saw Wyatt Stabnow (106 pounds) and Coy Childers (113 pounds) advance to the semifinals in Class B. Stabnow won, 7-4, while Childers shut out Omaha Skutt Catholic’s Gavin Ourada, 6-0.
Gering’s Frost Wallace (113 pounds) and Isaiah Murillo (144 pounds) both moved on to the semifinals. Wallace blanked Bennington’s Taiten Almond, 4-0, while Murillo cruised past Ralston’s Gage Grandel with a 17-3 major decision. Teammate Rece Knight (175 pounds) fell in the quarterfinals but remains in the consolation bracket.
Scottsbluff's Oscar Brown (113 pounds) and Daylon Adams (285 pounds) both secured spots in the semifinals. Brown rolled to a 12-4 major decision win in the quarterfinals, while Adams pinned Waverly’s Harrison Smith in 3:49. Fellow Bearcat Anthony Shifflett (106 pounds) fell 9-8 in his quarterfinal match, dropping into the consolation rounds.
Garden County’s Cable Larsen (126 pounds) and Jase Roberson (157 pounds), along with Ogallala’s Diego Juarez (106 pounds), all picked up first-round victories before falling in the quarterfinals. Each will have a chance to fight through the consolation bracket Friday.
The NSAA State Wrestling Championships continue Friday morning, with championship matches set for Saturday.
