Sidney High School FFA labor auction draws large crowd

SIDNEY -- Sidney High School FFA hosted its annual labor auction at the high school Saturday, February 15.
The event included a dinner of Rocky Mountain Oysters or chicken strips and all the extras. Supporters had the opportunity to win door prizes as well. Following the dinner, a labor auction was held with 39 students offering their skills for a price. The Sidney FFA Chapter has students from 8th grade to 12th. Proceeds from the Labor Auction supports club activities.
In addition to the students labor, there were donations from Simplot, Scooters Coffee and Nexgen Outfitters. At the end of the night, the Sidney FFA Chapter auctioned the remainder of the Rocky Mountain Oysters. Dave Dickey was the auctioneer of the night.
Two freshman students, Morgan Morlock and Silvana Gallegos-Torres, talked about their experiences in the Sidney FFA. Each student wrote an introduction in the program, and introduced themselves on stage.
"This is my first year. I just like working with agriculture, activities, farming, things like that and found that FFA had a lot of that," Morlock said.
In the program, Morlock said if it has an engine, she can drive it.
Gallegos-Torres, also a first year FFA student, said she was drawn to FFA because of the opportunities.
"I like being around people, animals, plants," she said.
Gallegos-Torres is new to Sidney High School. She said the February 15 Labor Auction was her first event in FFA.
"Some of the things I've learned were probably that working hard is going to get you a lot of places in life," she said.
What is FFA -- FFA stand for Future Farmers of America. FFA is not just for students who want to be production farmers, according to ffa.org. FFA also welcomes students with sights on careers as teachers, doctors, scientists, business owners and more. For this reason, the name of the organization was updated in 1988 after a vote of national convention delegates to reflect the growing diversity and new opportunities in the industry of agriculture.
The National FFA Organization remains committed to the individual student, providing a path to achievement in premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
