HARTINGTON - It took overtime for Wayne to survive Cedar Catholic 55-49, while Boone Central breezed past Ponca 63-44 in the boys semifinals of the Mid State Conference tournament Friday night.
The Trojans’ Jaymison Cattau hit a game-tying three with 7.4 seconds left in regulation to send it to the extra session, but Colson Nelsen‘s 16 points for the Blue Devils proved to be enough to send Wayne to the title tilt.
Kaden Keller and Jaxson Kneifl kicked in 14 points each for the Blue Devils, while Cedar Catholic’s Cattau led the way with 18, and Nolan Becker added 16 in support.
Things started out auspicious for Ponca, as Zain Stark hit a 60-foot buzzer-beater at the end of the 1st to give the Indians a 2-point lead. But from there, it was all Boone Central, as the Cards stormed to an 8-point halftime advantage, and won going away in the 4th by 19.
Freshman Kaden Miller paced the Cardinals with 23 on the night, including 6 three-pointers, while his brother Jaden chipped in 14. Trystan Bevelhymer did all he could for the Indians in the losing cause, finishing with five treys and 20 points.
Wayne and Boone Central will face off for the boys’ Mid State Conference tournament title Saturday night.
