STAPLETON, Neb. (KNOP) - A Stapleton High School principal and athletic director facing sexual abuse charges was found dead in a Nevada hotel room, authorities said.

Logan County Attorney Andrew Van Velson said a warrant was being processed for Jeremiah Johnson’s arrest when law enforcement discovered his vehicle and found him dead on Jan. 21.

The Logan County Sheriff’s Department was alerted on Jan. 20 by a parent who reported that Johnson had attempted to make sexual advances toward their student in a secluded area on school grounds. The student managed to escape, according to authorities.

The allegation prompted an investigation that led to criminal charges, a warrant for Johnson’s arrest, and the seizure of his electronic devices.

Following Johnson’s death, the Logan County Attorney’s Office recalled the warrant, and the case is now closed. However, Sheriff Sean Carson said investigators are looking into other potential incidents.

Previously, Johnson was a high school English teacher at Cedar Bluffs Public Schools from 2019 to 2022.
