SIDNEY, Neb. – A passenger van collided with the southeast corner of Sonny’s Super Foods early Friday morning, damaging the deli area but leaving the majority of the store open for business.

The crash occurred shortly before 4 a.m. during a police pursuit, according to the Sidney Police Department. Officers were pursuing the Chevrolet van after it struck a street sign near Crest View Apartments and nearly collided with a patrol car on 11th Avenue. The van then sped northbound at an estimated 90 miles per hour before crashing into the Rolling Pin Bakery and coming to a stop when it hit the south side of Sonny's Super Foods, where the deli area is housed.

Jason Schmunk, owner of Sonny’s Super Foods, said the damage is limited to the deli section.

“The deli is going to be out of business. Hopefully, we can get some of the basics going soon. Right now, the deli is out of commission,” Schmunk said. “It wiped out some of our equipment, but we’re focused on cleanup and assessing the damage (Friday).”

Schmunk added he hopes to have fried chicken available within the next day or two. He emphasized the rest of the store remains fully operational.

The driver of the van, a man whose name has not been released, was taken to Sidney Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said officers rendered medical aid at the scene and called for assistance from emergency medical services and the fire department. Officers are continuing to monitor the driver at the hospital as the investigation unfolds.

No other injuries were reported.

Sidney Police continue to investigate the incident.
