UPDATE: 3:30 p.m. -- A city news release says the fire caused $495,000 in damage and the affected building is a total loss. The investigation revealed that the fire was most likely accidental and happened because of metal utensils in a running microwave.

UPDATE: 10:30 a.m. -- A city spokesperson says one person was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The original report was that no one was injured in the fire.

HASTINGS, Neb. – A multi-unit living residence at a senior living community in Hastings is destroyed after it caught fire early Wednesday morning.

Officials with Hastings Fire and Rescue said the first call came in at 5:36 a.m. for a smoke investigation. 

When crews arrived on scene at the residence in the Good Samaritan Village just off of E D St., they found flames coming from the building and upgraded the call to a three-alarm fire. 

Authorities said the affected home had three separate units, and the fire started in the middle unit. 

According to a city spokesperson, two residents, plus a cat were evacuated from their respective units, and one person was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The third unit was unoccupied at the time. 

The fire has been put out, but crews were still on scene at 8:30 a.m. spraying water on the building and looking for hot spots. 

The cause of the fire and damage estimates are being investigated.

Hastings Fire and Rescue, Hastings Rural Volunteer Fire Department, Juniata Volunteer Fire Department, Glenvil Volunteer Fire Department, Adams County Emergency Management, Hastings Police, Hastings Utilities, and the Hastings Streets Department all responded to the fire.
