BROKEN BOW, Neb. - A fire northeast of Broken Bow is now approximately 75% contained, according to the Broken Bow Volunteer Fire Department. The fire, which started Thursday, has scorched an estimated 2,800 acres.

Firefighters faced additional challenges on Sunday, battling a smaller fire in the area that consumed another 100 acres.

“Yesterday we also did back-during around and into the canyons to build more of a barrier,” said firefighter Andy Holland.

The fire, which started in a ditch and has destroyed three uninhabited buildings, has been deemed accidental.

One man was killed while helping neighbors move cattle away from the fire. The Custer County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 40-year-old Chase Christen, who died Thursday when his UTV rolled down an embankment near the Adams Land and Cattle East Lot, ejecting him.
