Columbus High’s Addi Johnson signs to play volleyball at UNK

A star Columbus High athlete is staying in her home state to play college volleyball.

COLUMBUS, Neb. — A star Columbus High athlete is staying in her home state to play college volleyball.

Addi Johnson signed her letter of intent to the University of Nebraska-Kearney on Wednesday. She says UNK can help her reach all of her goals.

“Just the whole culture I felt like at UNK was just really awesome around academically, athletically," Johnson said. "I just really loved the people.”

Johnson, a 5-10 outside hitter, led the Discoverers with 404 kills and notched a .214 hitting percentage. She racked up 29 aces and was second on the team with 262 digs.

She says she’s built a good relationship with 25th-year Coach Rick Squiers, whose Lopers are ranked #10 in the country.

“I love his coaching style. He’ll get on you but you know he’s doing it because he wants you to be better and to push you," Johnson said. "That’s what I need, personally, to grow.”

Johnson helped Columbus High to an 18-14 record facing tough Class A competition. The Discoverers played in their first district final since 2018.

“I’m grateful for what I’m able to leave behind here at CHS," Johnson said. "Hopefully they keep the program rolling and CHS volleyball just keeps improving.”
