Columbus Fire Department receives award from American Red Cross

COLUMBUS, Neb. -- The Columbus Fire Department recently received an award from the American Red Cross.
The Community Preparedness Award was given to CFD on June 23 in Grand Island for "its proactive efforts in keeping the community safe." The award was decided by the Central and Western Nebraska Board of Directors for the American Red Cross.
The award comes from a partnership between CFD and the American Red Cross in which they "identify high-risk neighborhoods to help install smoke detectors in homes at no cost to the occupants, as well as educate them on fire safety and help them make a home escape plan in the event of a fire."
Between 400 to 500 smoke detectors have been installed locally in the last four years by CFD and the American Red Cross.
The award was also given to Platte County Emergency Management.
