DWIGHT, Neb. -- Several firefighters were called to a massive blaze in rural Butler County early Wednesday afternoon.

Initial reports indicated a payloader was on fire between Brainard and Dwight, with the call coming in at approximately 1:30 p.m.

"We had an excellent response from both Brainard and Dwight," Brainard Assistant Fire Chief Brad Vandenberg said. "You've got to remember that these are all volunteers."

Vandeberg said there were 14 firefighters from Brainard and five from Dwight as part of the mutual aid call. He said they were the only two agencies on scene.

"We showed up, and we put it out," Vandenberg said.

Vandenberg said it took crews 15 minutes to put the fire out, and they remained on scene for approximately 45 to 60 minutes afterward.

Witnesses reported seeing smoke for several miles in the region.

There were no injuries.

Vandenberg said there was no cause determined, and he was unsure of the extent of monetary damages.
