Platte County accident leaves one severely injured

COLUMBUS, Neb. -- A two-vehicle accident in Platte County resulted in injuries Monday evening.
The Platte County Sheriff's Office said that on Nov. 14 around 7 p.m. they were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of 53rd St and 48th Ave, about a mile north of Columbus.
According to the Sheriff's Office an investigation showed that a 1994 Chevy van, driven by a 61-year-old Columbus man, had been traveling south on 48th Ave.; and a 2018 Chevy Traverse, driven by a 31-year-old Columbus man, had been traveling north on 48th Ave.
Officials said that when the Traverse reached the intersection at 53rd St., it started turning west onto 53rd St. and this was when the vehicles collided.
It was reported that both of the vehicles sustained heavy front end damage.
The Sheriff's Office said that a passenger in the Chevy van, a 58-year-old woman from Columbus, was taken by Columbus Rescue to the local hospital. Authorities said she was later transported by a medical helicopter to UNMC with life threatening injuries.
No other occupants in either of the vehicles needed medical attention, said officials.
The Platte County Sheriff's Office said that 48th Ave., where the accident happened, stayed closed for about an hour and a half because of the investigation and the clean up of the scene.
The Sheriff's Office said they were assisted by the Columbus Police Department.
It was reported that alcohol was not suspected and seatbelt use in either vehicle is unknown at this time.
The accident remains under investigation by the Platte County Sheriff's Office.
