COLUMBUS, Neb. -- Authorities in Columbus responded to a three-vehicle accident that resulted in multiple injuries Thursday night. 

The Columbus Police Department said they and Columbus fire were dispatched to the intersection of 45th Ave. and 23rd St. for an injury accident around 7:30 p.m.

The Police Department said that when officers arrived they were able to identify the accident involved three vehicles. 

The three vehicles were identified by police as a white Ford Taurus, a gray Dodge Ram pickup and a blue Chevy Equinox. 

CPD the drivers of the Ford Taurus, a 36-year-old, and Dodge Ram, a 55-year-old, were transported to a local hospital with injuries and were subsequently transferred to other hospitals. 

The 36-year-old sustained a head trauma and the 55-year-old sustained injuries to the chest, according to authorities. 

Police said they interviewed several witnesses of the accident. From their statements and the accident scene officers said they learned that the Taurus was heading west of 23rd St., and had stopped at a red light at the 45th Ave. intersection. 

The CPD said the Taurus had gotten a green light and was starting to go through the light continuing west.

Authorities said the Ram was heading west on 23rd St. approaching 45th Ave. and witnesses told them that the pickup was driving towards the intersection at a high speed and rear-ended the Taurus. 

It was reported that the Ram had launched across the eastbound lanes and came to rest in the ditch. 

The Taurus was propelled forward from the impact, hitting the Equinox that was heading west, driving up over the embankment on the north side of the road, and coming to rest on the access road. 

The 55-year-old driver of the Ram was issued a citation for reckless driving and no operators license. 

The CPD said officers are still investigation the accident. 

Authorities said the 55-year-old may have been experiencing a medical/cognitive issue before the accident.
