COLUMBUS, Neb. – The Columbus community came together Sunday to support victims of child abuse.
Guardians of the Children’s Heartland Chapter, a nonprofit group comprised of motorcyclists, held its third annual event on Sunday. It was the first time the event was held in Columbus at Nebraska Public Power District, moving there due to growing attendance after the first two events were held in Clarks.
Chapter president Ed Bogue said the group uses motorcycles as tools to help children who are victims of abuse become strong, confident and courageous again.
Guardians of the Children escorts children to court, school and social events at the child’s request, with the goal of providing safe spaces for the children, according to group leaders. Members of the group take children to football games and live events as part of the process of supporting child abuse victims.
Sunday’s event in Columbus included the Columbus High School marching band, food, games, tattoos, a car and motorcycle show, 9/11 tributes and more. Among the 9/11-themed festivities at Sunday's event were tributes to first responders and the country's armed forces.
The Heartland Chapter is one of three GOC chapters in Nebraska, with North Platte and Chadron also represented.
