Stothert makes first public remarks since husband's death
Dr. Joe Stothert was found dead at the couple’s home, having died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on March 5th.

OMAHA, Neb. -- Mayor Jean Stothert made her first public appearance in 11 days Tuesday, following the unexpected death of her husband.
Dr. Joe Stothert was found dead at the couple’s home, having died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on March 5th.
“Lately, Joe had begun to change," Stothert said. "Our family noticed it, and his work family noticed it. The past year had been very difficult for Joe.”
“The questions that we have will never be fully answered. We know that and we accept it. We also know that mental-health challenges and depression are prevalent and that those working in health care are at greater risk.”
According to the mayor’s office, Stothert's remarks at City Hall are part a “gradual transition” back to work later this week.
Stothert is up for re-election this spring and there is every expectation that she will stay in the race, even though her campaign is currently suspended.
The primary is April 6th and the general election is May 11th.
Early voting begins Monday.
