Nebraska scored 10 runs on 10 hits, while Florida State totaled a run and two hits.
Dylan Carey fell a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with a double, homer and five RBI. Jett Buck was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Will Jesske had an RBI double, while Case Sanderson, Joshua Overbeek, Miken Miller and Drew Grego tallied one hit apiece.
Gavin Blachowicz improved to 1-0 on the season after dealing five one-hit innings. The sophomore allowed just a solo homer while striking out six and walking a pair.
Colin Nowaczyk pitched two shutout frames with four punchouts and a walk, before Cooper Katskee made his Husker debut in the bottom of the eighth. Katskee surrendered just one hit and punched out four Seminoles across a pair of scoreless innings.
The Huskers got off to a quick start, plating three runs behind a pair of hits in the top of the first inning. Mac Moyer drew a leadoff walk, and Buck lined a 2-2 pitch to the wall in left field for a double to put runners on first and second with no outs.
Sanderson walked on four pitches, before Overbeek lifted a sacrifice fly to deep left field to plate Moyer and give the Big Red a 1-0 lead. Carey blasted the first pitch he saw off the top of the wall in left-center field for a two-RBI double to stretch the lead to 3-0.
The Big Red tacked on two more runs in the third inning to extend the lead to 5-0. Consecutive singles from Buck and Sanderson put runners on first and third to begin the inning, setting up Carey’s RBI single through the left side that brought home Buck. Sanderson and Carey advanced to second and third on a double steal, followed by an RBI groundout from Kitchens that grew the lead to five.
Florida State recorded its first hit and run of the afternoon with a one-out solo homer to left-center field in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Huskers poured in three runs on two hits in the top of the sixth inning to blow the game open at 8-0. Preston Freeman pinch-ran for Cole Kitchens after the senior was plunked on the shoulder. Freeman moved to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on Jesske’s RBI double to left field. Miller laced an RBI single to center, scoring Jesske from second base. Back-to-back walks to Grego and Moyer loaded the bases, before Buck lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Miller and made it an 8-0 game.
Nowaczyk retired the Seminoles in order with three consecutive strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth, while Carey’s two-run, inside-the-park homer off the wall in right-center field enlarged the NU lead to 10-1 in the top of the seventh.
Nowaczyk worked around a walk in the seventh, and Katskee sat down the Seminoles in order in the eighth inning to keep FSU at one hit going into the bottom of the ninth.
Katskee surrendered a leadoff single and hit a batter to put runners on first and second with no outs for FSU in the bottom of the ninth. The right-hander retired the next three batters to clinch Nebraska’s 10-1 win over the Seminoles on Sunday afternoon.
Nebraska returns to play next weekend, as the Huskers venture south for a three-game series at No. 9 Auburn on Friday-Sunday, Feb. 27-March 1.
Prince Three Pushes Huskers Past Huskies
Seattle - Britt Prince's three-pointer with seven seconds left lifted Nebraska to a 66-65 road win at Washington on Sunday at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Prince, a 5-11 sophomore point guard from Omaha, finished with a game-high 22 points while adding team highs of six rebounds, six assists and three steals in a tremendous all-around effort to help the Huskers snap a six-game losing streak all against NCAA NET top-25 teams.
The Huskers improved to 17-11 overall and 6-11 in the Big Ten, while NCAA NET 29 Washington slipped to 19-9 and 9-8 in the conference.
Nebraska trailed 63-57 with 4:16 left, before the Huskers answered with a 6-0 run that included back-to-back layups by Amiah Hargrove to tie the game at 63 with 1:17 left. Hargrove, a 6-2 sophomore forward from Christopher, Ill., finished with 14 points, four rebounds and two blocked shots.
Washington national player-of-the-year candidate Sayvia Sellers stopped the Husker run with a driving layup with 16.5 seconds left to give the Huskies a 65-63 lead. But after a Husker timeout to advance the ball and a foul by Sellers to help Washington diagnose the Nebraska set play, Prince dribbled Sellers into the key before stepping back for a three-pointer over Sellers with seven seconds left.
Washington called timeout to advance the ball and got three shots at the rim, but the last one fell harmlessly to the floor to set off a celebration for the Huskers.
Jessica Petrie put three Huskers in double figures with 11 points, four rebounds and two steals off the bench, while Logan Nissley contributed eight points, including a pair of three-pointers for the Big Red.
Nebraska hit 42.6 percent (26-61) of its shots for the game, including 5-of-16 threes (.313), while sinking 9-of-12 free throws, including a pair from Prince in the fourth quarter to start NU's 6-0 run. The Huskers won the turnover battle, 17-11, and outscored UW 19-6 in points off those turnovers.
The Huskers held Washington to just 39.7 percent (27-68) shooting from the field, including just 5-of-26 threes (.192). It was the first time in February that Nebraska's defense held an opponent under 50 percent from the field. UW also sank 6-of-8 free throws. The Huskies dominated the glass, 46-28, including 17 offensive rebounds. The Dawgs turned the boards into a 17-5 edge in second-chance points but it was not enough to overcome NU's 13-point edge in points off turnovers.
Sellers led Washington with 14 but committed six turnovers, including a pair in the closing minutes. Freshman post Brynn McGaughy added 14 points and nine rebounds, while Avery Howell added 13 points and 10 boards.
Sellers scored seven points in the third quarter to help turn the tide in favor of home-standing Washington, as the Huskies carried a 51-47 lead to the fourth period.
Nebraska took a 35-32 lead to halftime after building a 17-12 lead at the end of one quarter. Prince led the Big Red with 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals in the half, while Hargrove added eight points and two boards.
The Huskers hit 15-of-34 shots but just 2-of-8 threes in the half, while holding UW to 14-of-35 shooting, including 3-of-14 threes. NU won the first-half turnover battle, 9-5, and outscored Washington 10-2 in points off turnovers.
Nebraska, which led by nine in the first quarter, took its biggest lead of the half at 24-12 with 7:38 left in the half, before Washington started chopping away at the Husker advantage. Howell and McGaughy each scored eight points to lead the Huskies in the first half. Hannah Stines, who finished with nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists, added a strong half for UW with seven points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Huskers held Sellers to just two points with two fouls and four turnovers on 1-of-5 shooting.
Nebraska will enjoy the midweek off from competition before returning to Pinnacle Bank Arena for its final game of the regular season when the Huskers play host to Rutgers on Saturday, Feb. 28.
