SIDNEY – Sidney officials are trying to decide what to do with an electric generation plant that is no longer needed.

Electricity Superintendent Tom Mathine approached the City Council Tuesday seeking an open discussion on the generators.

“So with our new generation plant scheduled to become operational this March, the existing generators of the downtown power plant will no longer be required. These engines have served the city reliably but with a new facility coming online, they have become surplus to our needs. I respectfully ask council’s authorization to put these old generators up for competitive bid,” Mathine said.

He said offering the generators for competitive bid would potentially result in revenue for the city and define any interest from outside sources in the generators. He said the exact amount of revenue will depend on market interest and bid results.

“The people in Texas that keep reaching out that’s what they do for a living. They strip it for material. There is a company in South Dakota that still uses these units. Power Tech, whose helping us out with the new generation right now, they were going to look into that for me too and see if they would have any use for those parts,” he said.
