CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team put four players in double figures enroute to their third straight win downing Central Wyoming College 70-66 in the Thanksgiving Classic in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on Friday.
WNCC will wrap up the Thanksgiving Classic when they take on the host Laramie County Community College Saturday at 3 p.m. LCCC fell to No. 15 New Mexico Junior College 76-69 on Friday.
Friday’s contest saw the Cougars shoot 40 percent from the field and 40 percent from the 3-point arc. The Cougars were also 70 percent from the free throw line.
Ella Chesta-Carty led the team with 16 points, including going 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Celina Donyo had 14 points while Veralyn Aviles had 13. Zozefine Sipolina chipped in 12 points with two 3-pointers.
WNCC led 9-5 on a Chesta-Carty 3-pointer. Central Wyoming cough back and led 19-14 and led 21-18 after the first quarter.
The second quarter saw WNCC outscore the Rustlers 19-15. Central Wyoming led 38-24 before the Cougars scored seven straight, capped off by a Juseana-Rae Delatori 3pointer for a 31-28 lead. Central Wyoming came right back to lead 35-31 and later 36-35. Veralyn Aviles put WNCC up 37-36 at halftime with a bucket just before the buzzer.
Central Wyoming score the first bucket of the third quarter, but the Cougars went on a 12-1 including nine straight for a 49-39 lead. WNCC couldn’t hold the double-digit lead as Central Wyoming went on a 8-5 run to make it a 54-49 WNCC lead after three periods.
WNCC jumped toa 61-53 lead in the fourth on a 3-pointer by Sipolina with 4:20 to play. Central Wyoming came back to tied the game at 61-61. WNCC responded with a 7-0 run to lead 68-61 with 14.2 seconds to play and won 70-66.
