Gas fire reported at plant north of Sidney; evacuations underway
SIDNEY - Authorities are responding to a gas fire at a plant north of Sidney Tuesday morning, according to the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office.
The fire was reported around 9:19 a.m. east of the Tallgrass plant on County Road 28 and U.S. Highway 385, where crews were called to a well blowout. Officials confirm the incident involves gas fire at the plant.
Deputies say evacuations are underway for residents near and southeast of the facility. Authorities closed County Road 111 from Country 28 to 32 and Country Road 28 from Highway 385 to County Road 111.
Sheriff Adam Frerichs says no public traffic is being allowed in or near the area.
"I cannot allow anyone any closer than north of the scene on Road 32," Frerichs said. "Please steer clear of the south of the incident. I cannot release any more than that at this time."
Sheriff’s officials emphasize there is no danger to residents within the city of Sidney.
Initial reports indicated three to four people had been working on a well when it blew out.
Officials on scene told News Channel Nebraska one person was being treated for injuries, while another remained unaccounted for as of mid-morning. Horizontal flames could be seen from as far as a half mile away.
Multiple emergency agencies continue to respond, including a special response team out of Greeley, Colo.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
