Leyton athlete commits to Dakota Wesleyan
DALTON -- Leyton High School track and volleyball athlete Riley Jones Wednesday committed to Dakota Wesleyan University.
She will compete in track and volleyball.
"There's no other way to describe it other than it felt like home. I had a really great conversation with Coach Lit. He's a track coach and it just felt like the right decision. It's really easy to get super-lost in the recruitment process with all the numbers and everything, but it just felt right," Jones said.
Her current track events are high jump, hurdles and run relays. She said she's not sure what she will do at Dakota Wesleyan.
Her interests in athletics and competing are expected to follow her into the classroom. She wants to study to be an athletic trainer.
Athletic competition has always been ingrained in her, she said.
"My dad was a coach of everything. I don't know if there's something he hasn't coached, so I was always interrupting practices. It was just kind of a no-brainer. I actually stopped high jumping and jumping altogether my 8th grade year because I just hated it. Then my coach forced me to start again and I ended up falling back in love with it, and it's been history ever since," she said.
Dakota Wesleyan University was established in Mitchell in 1885 when Dakota was still a territory. Dakota Wesleyan University was founded by a group of pioneers of the Dakotas Conference of the Methodist Church, according to the DWU website.
