LINCOLN - A Columbus man who died while attempting to save someone's life during the spring floods is being honored this week.

The American Red Cross and Hy-Vee will recognize James Wilke as Nebraska's 2019 "citizen hero" during the Nebraska-Iowa football game this Friday at Memorial Stadium.

The 50-year-old died in March while attempting to rescue a stranded driver near his farm in Platte County.  He tried to reach a stranded motorist with his tractor near Shell Creek, when the bridge over the creek collapsed under the tractor's weight and he was swept downstream.

Wilke's family will be presented the award at halftime.
