SIDNEY, Neb. — Critical fire weather conditions are expected Saturday across the Nebraska Panhandle and northeast Colorado, prompting the National Weather Service to issue Red Flag Warnings for much of the region.

The warnings will be in effect from late morning through the afternoon Saturday as strong northwest winds combine with very low humidity and dry fuels. In the Nebraska Panhandle, Red Flag Warnings are in place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 45 mph. Relative humidity is expected to fall to between 10 and 15 percent, creating conditions favorable for rapid fire spread.

The National Weather Service in North Platte also issued Red Flag Warnings for portions of the eastern Panhandle and southwest Nebraska during the same time frame. Forecasters said any fire starts could grow quickly and be difficult to control.

In northeast Colorado, Red Flag Warnings are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday for Logan, Washington, Sedgwick and Phillips counties. Winds are forecast to gust up to 45 mph, with humidity dropping as low as 13 percent.

Fire officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and activities that could spark a wildfire, including discarding cigarettes, welding or parking vehicles on dry grass. Strong winds may also cause fires to spread rapidly across open rangeland.
