SIDNEY - The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for the entire Nebraska Panhandle on Friday, citing dry conditions, gusty winds and low humidity that could lead to rapid fire spread.

The warning is in effect from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., including the Pine Ridge and Nebraska National Forest region, the Box Butte and Niobrara River area, the lower North Platte River Basin near Scotts Bluff National Monument and the Lodgepole Creek and southern Nebraska Panhandle region.

Forecasters say westerly winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph, are expected through the afternoon. Relative humidity values are forecast to drop between 13 and 18 percent.

The combination of dry air, warm temperatures and gusty winds could make any fire difficult to control, the weather service said. Residents are strongly urged to avoid outdoor burning and activities that could spark a fire.

A Red Flag Warning is issued when critical fire weather conditions are occurring or expected soon.

Officials urge the public to use caution with machinery, ensure trailer chains are not dragging, properly dispose of cigarettes and report any smoke or fire immediately to local authorities.
