The proposed merger of two utility companies that serve the Midwest is now in the hands of state regulators.

Black Hills Corp. and NorthWestern Energy have announced that the required paperwork has been submitted to the Nebraska Public Service Commission.

The two companies have also looked for approval from regulatory bodies in South Dakota, Montana and at the federal level.

The news of the multi-billion dollar merger came out in August. With approval, it would take effect in 12 to 15 months.
