Wolverines pass rush, run game too much for Huskers
LINCOLN, Neb. - On a day that began with hope for Nebraska to finally pick up the elusive Top 25 win, ends with much of Husker nation with feeling all too familiar.
Nebraska falls 30-27 to #21 Michigan, leading to a 28th consecutive loss to a Top 25 foe. Quarterback Dylan Raiola was sacked seven times in the loss, while the Wolverines ran for nearly 300 yards.
"Obviously a disappointing loss for us," Head Coach Matt Rhule said. "It's one in which, if we're smart about, we can learn about ourselves and about where we need to approve and where we're headed."
Despite another 300 yard passing day, Dylan Raiola also fired his first interception of the season and was under heavy fire from the Wolverines pass rush all day long. Raiola didn't blame his offensive line, but put it on himself, saying he needs to better recognize the blitz.
"Tip the cap, they rushed hard all game," Raiola said. "We knew they had good pass rushers, but, got to find a way to get the ball out quicker. There's no magic sauce, just have to figure it out and move on."
Nebraska surrendered 286 rushing yards to the Wolverines, and nearly nine yards per attempt. The big play was a problem for the Big Red, allowing touchdowns of 37 yards, 75 yards, and 54 yards.
Maybe the most deflating part of the game came late in the fourth quarter, where Michigan converted 3 straight third downs. The Blackshirts saying postgame, they didn't get worn out, but they just didn't execute.
"I felt like, compared to Cincinnati a few weeks ago, we did a good job keeping our composure," linebacker Dasasn McCullough said. "It was the execution, we need more hats to the ball and need everybody doing their job."
It's football, things happen, and there's things we could have done to defend third down and the run game," defensive lineman Elijah Jeudy said. "It's something we have to work on and better at."
The highlight of the day came on the final play of the first half - a Hail Mary touchdown from Dylan Raiola to Jacory Barney, for Barney's second touchdown of the day.
"We run that every week in practice, I just had to do my assignment," Barney said. "Dylan made a good throw, I made a good catch.. I'm proud of it, wasn't enough, need to make another play."
Nebraska falls to 3-1 on the year, heading into a bye week. The Huskers return to action on Oct. 4, hosting Michigan State.
