Local man makes an impact, one wrapper at a time
NORFOLK, Neb. — Some might think the trash on the side of the road is none of their business, but for this retiree, it’s his passion.
Don Davis has been cleaning up trash from the streets of Norfolk for 5 years.
“It’s actually became my retirement job,” Davis said.
Retiring in 2020, Davis has yet to take a break…coming out multiple times a week to walk miles on the streets and do his part.
It’s not just trash and food that Davis is picking up, he saves scrap metal, clothes, and even the shoes on his feet.
Though the journey started with cans, picking them up on his walks.
“It’s comical.” Davis said, “I don’t know if I’m supposed to check in garbage cans but I do.”
He’s not afraid to get his hands dirty, grabbing trash with no gloves and a smile on his face.
Even in the unpredictable weather of Nebraska, Davis makes it a point to get out of the house.
“Most people would have said no way I’m going to walk.” Davis said, “But I’ve found out that I don’t like- I’m not the guy that can sit around and read a book.”
Though for Davis, it’s not about cleaning up after people. What means the most to him is the integrity of it all.
“Giving and expecting nothing in return.” Davis said.
Davis received the People Power award from the City of Norfolk back in June, but to him, he didn’t think he needed it.
“When they first were going to do it, I was kinda like well I don’t really want this- I don’t really need this award.” Davis said, “ But then I had to look at it and say well I’m doing something that normal people don’t do.”
It’s not all about cleaning up the streets, sometimes all you need is a little pep in your step and a goal to help others.
