WAYNE, Neb. - Backup quarterback Abram Scholting scored two rushing touchdowns in the second half to carry Nebraska-Kearney past Wayne State 28-21 on Thursday night.

The game marked the 85th edition of a fierce in-state rivalry that hadn't been played since 2011 because of conference scheduling requirements.

Scholting entered the game in the third quarter after starter Daron Bryden suffered an apparent leg injury. Scholting, playing just 30 miles from his hometown of Pierce, went 3-4 for 51 yards and ran for 39 yards on 8 carries as Bryden's replacement.

The game started in UNK's favor. The Lopers forced a three-and-out to begin the game and scored just two plays later on a 55-yard run by Isaiah Harris. The teams alternated touchdowns the rest of the way. The Lopers' final score was set up by another long run. Harris took it 41 yards to the two-yard line. A few plays later, Scholting ran it in for the winning score.

UNK finished off the win with the defense's third interception of the game. Saieed Hassan picked off Bennett Dannenbring with 15 seconds left.

Dane Peterson was the top performer for Wayne State. He led the Wildcats with six catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns.
