Outdoor notes: Kayak cleanup at Lake Minatare SRA Aug. 21
Join Nebraska Game and Parks Commission outdoor educators for a night of service – removing trash while kayaking at Lake Minatare State Recreation Area on Aug. 21.
Trash bags and gloves will be provided as leaders and volunteers clean up trash from 6-8 p.m.
Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own kayaks, but a limited number of kayaks will be available on a first-come basis. Registration is required.
For more information, including where to meet, and to register, visit the calendar event entry at Calendar.OutdoorNebraska.gov.
Don’t forget to purchase a required vehicle park entry permit to enter those parks. Get one at OutdoorNebraska.gov or at the park entrance.
Fort Kearny SRA expands reservations during crane migration
For the first time, Fort Kearny State Recreation Area will open reservations early to accommodate visitors planning trips to witness the spring sandhill crane migration.
Starting Sept. 2 at 9 a.m. Central time, guests may reserve stays at Fort Kearny beginning March 1 for the park’s 38 reservable campsites. The remainder of the park will be available on a walk-in basis. Reservations may be made by calling 1-844-637-2757.
These early reservations are offered at the reduced nonpeak rate, as water-dependent amenities such as dump stations, water hookups, and modern restrooms may not yet be available due to seasonal freeze risks.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is extending the reservation window on these existing reservable sites for the convenience of those visiting south-central Nebraska to view the annual migration.
