SIDNEY -- The adventure started with an interest in a side-business. Now the Grunigs are a few weeks away from opening a street front location.

The shaved ice concept was born as a friend was starting hers.

"We had a good friend who wanted to do it. She made business plans, and I thought 'well, we're not going to compete with her. I didn't want to. She was my good friend. So she did it and, for, she did it for one year, and she had some things in her life change, and so the next year she asked if she could sell it to us," Madison Grunig said.

And the "Sweet Ice" enterprise began.

"We took it and for three years we sold shaved ice at local events like Gold Rush Days and the Cheyenne County Fair, Downtown Sounds. We've gone to Potter Days, the Deuel County Fair ... just things like that," she said.

Madison and Keith Grunig decided to take the next step and include a taste of home.

"We wanted to expand. I love to bake. So we're going to add some baked goods, and also flavored sodas, 'dirty sodas,'" she said.

Keith's background is business. In addition to being hands-on, his marketing background is what keeps Sweet Ice moving forward.

"My background is business and analytics and that sort of thing, and marketing. That's what I do for my day job. That's the stuff that I like. I kind of think of the, how do we make this better, how do we make it financially evident. We gotta make it work; all that other stuff. So, we've been looking at this for a while. Dirty soda trend is actually on the upswing. So, it's coming. It kind of started in Utah and it's moving east. There's a couple in Scottsbluff, one in Alliance. There's a couple in Cheyenne, couple in Denver. We think that it's a trend that will probably continue to go up," he said.

They plan to have it open in a few weeks.
