Thunderbolt's take down Panthers thanks to stellar defense
NORFOLK - The first day of May brought near perfect weather to Norfolk as the Panthers hosted Lincoln Pius X in a late-season contest.
The Panthers opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning after a hit and a pair of walks as Hayden Kelley singled through the gap to score Ethan Synovec from third. The Thunderbolt's defense got out of the inning with an unassisted double play from Kai Vanis.
After a pair of scoreless inning for Pius X, they cracked the scoreboard in the third inning after securing some baserunners and scoring on an error to tie the game. In the same inning, a single from Noah Barnes scored Jesus Yanez to give the Bolt the go-ahead run.
Norfolk started the third inning strong with a single from Papstein and a triple from Makshantsev, but from right field, Sam Kassmeier gunned down Papstein on his way to the plate, stealing the momentum and stopping the Panthers scoring threat.
Pius X added another run in the 5th inning to increase the lead to 3-1.
Norfolk had a chance in the bottom of the 7th after a leadoff single, but more incredible defense was seen when Lucas Mlnarik saved a hit on a full-extension diving grab - his second of the game.
Pius X also saw excellent pitching from Kaleb Ledgerwood, who started slow, but bounced back with seven strikeouts, allowing five hits and only one earned run in six and two-thirds innings pitched. Ledgerwood also threw 105 pitches.
With the 3-1 win, the Bolt's move to 9-12 on the season, while the Panthers fall to 6-14.
