Half-court shot, fourth-quarter run lifts Omaha Westview over Kearney 59-52
KEARNEY, Neb. - John Sims hit a half-court shot at the end of the third quarter to spark a 16-0 run and help Omaha Westview to a 59-52 win at Kearney.
The big shot followed what seemed like it could be a defining moment in the game. With both teams struggling to find separation, Kearney (15-6) star senior Ben Johnson hit a three-pointer with six seconds left in the third quarter to give the Bearcats a seven-point lead. With the crowd roaring and momentum swinging to the home side, Sims calmly banked in the half-courter at the buzzer to silence the arena.
The shot proved to be the jolt the #3 Wolverines (21-2) needed. They took advantage of Bearcat turnovers to score 13-straight points to open the fourth quarter. Kearney answered with a 5-0 spurt to make it a four-point game midway through the final quarter but never got closer than that. During the fourth quarter, Sims was involved in nearly every big moment with his defense, passing or shot-making.
Kearney was the aggressor to start the game and used a zone defense to slow down the Wolverines. The Bearcats led 10-2 and had a took a nine-point advantage to halftime. Jacob Webber led all scorers with 23 points and Johnson added 22 in his final home game. Sims led Westview with 19 points.
